Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty.

First of all, we want to wish all of our readers a very happy holiday season! Christmas time has always been a special time for us because we get to see people adopt the true spirit of giving. It is magical to see how capable humans are of doing good in the world, and this couldn't be more true during the month of December!

We've been a little stumped trying to figure out what to get the special people in our lives (who already have everything they could possibly want/need) for Christmas. Then, last night while perusing the internet, we stumbled across something awesome on the Human Society of America website. There are these adorable keepsake Christmas ornaments that the organization releases every year which can be purchased separately for $19.99. Your loved one can also receive the ornament and a personalized card when you make a $50 or more donation. The proceeds go towards helping The Humane Society of America end animal suffering throughout the coming year. So, if you know your family member or friend has a soft spot for animals, this couldn't be a better gift!

This year's 2010 Humane Society Keepsake Ornament celebrates pigs as a wonderful member of the animal kingdom as well as the efforts being made to protect them. You can purchase your very own here.

Happy Holidays!

Jake the Wonder Dog!

Last weekend we had the pleasure of taking a very special dog on a hike. Jake was rescued by Big Dawg Rescue this summer from an animal shelter in Tracy. Unfortunately, due to the major impact of the housing market crash in the Tracy area, many home owners can no longer care for their animals. This has caused a huge increase in the amount of dogs and cats in local shelters and has also increased the need for more foster volunteers. I had the absolute pleasure of fostering Jake for a few weeks and then found him in a loving home in Pleasanton. Jake's new forever home has welcomed him with open arms, but their son Christopher especially has formed a strong bond with him. Christopher joined us on a lovely hike in the Pleasanton Foothills.

Helping a family adopt such a wonderful dog into the family has been an incredibly inspiring experience! We hope many more people will open their doors and hearts to help dogs in need.

Happy Birthday Kayo!

Last Tuesday there was reason to celebrate, Kayo turned one! He is our good friend's young and rambunctious boxer. We decided to make him a peanut butter carrot cake, with a vanilla cream cheese frosting. It smelled so good out of the oven, we wanted to take a slice for ourselves.

We decorated the yummy bundt cake with blueberry flavored dog treats, shaped into a doghouse which was featured on the front with his name. We filled the center with round treats for the doggies to enjoy later.

He shared his cake with his older sister Kali, both were begging for more. We hope we made his birthday just a little more special.

New Recipe: Peanut Pup Treats

This past Saturday we had a WILD time making sweet .... wait for it... DOG TREATS! Thats right, dog treats! This was a fun new recipe we wanted to get "doggy approved"! It looks as though these treats were a success according to the feedback we received. The ingredients in our treats will always be natural and fresh. Our homemade treats are free of unnecessary chemicals and preservatives and are always made fresh weekly. Why not have your pups indulge in homemade, natural, and healthy treats? We do!

Our vision is to help pet owners provide their dog's with a happy and healthy life. Both can be achieved with Hounds on Hikes. Heart healthy, whole-grain treats, and plenty of exercise is what you can always expect to receive from us.

You can purchase these tasty treats for $5.00 a bag and $1.00 will go to supporting a local animal rescue. Feel free to contact us to get your goodies today!

Sugar, Sugar

One of our nights we had the pleasure of enjoying the company of Sugar, a pointer mix. She was a young sweet girl, who had led a rough life. She was rescued from a very bad environment where she was bred to be a hunting dog, and when she didn't perform as expected she was locked up in a room and left to starve.

When she was taken by Best Friends she had a paw that had been crushed and left to heal on its own without any proper care, and it healed wrong. She also battled with heart worm, thank goodness Best Friends got to her on time. She will be receiving surgery soon to help correct her paw, and will then be looking for the perfect forever home.

She was such a little doll, she enjoyed being on the couch snuggling with her human friends. She was timid at first but warmed up quickly, and later we learned she loved to run. She went out running in the rain and mud and loved every minute, but quickly retreated to the couch when she returned.

Umbro the Pup

After a full day of volunteering at Best Friends, we were able to take a special friend home for an overnight stay. We were lucky enough to get a wonderful 6 month pup Umbro (lab-pit mix). He was such a snuggle bug.

He came from a litter of 7 who were rescued from an Arizona animal group. We were able to keep him for two nights, which was not enough. We wanted to take him home with us.

He had the best temperaments for such a young boy. He was very well behaved and just enjoyed being with people. He enjoyed going out on walks and experiencing all the sights and smells all around him.
